Checkout Counter Merchandising: 7 Ways to Turn Q4 Foot Traffic into Bigger Baskets
7 Ways to Turn Q4 Foot Traffic into Bigger Baskets
Every customer in your store walks past the register. In November and December that matters more than usual: the National Retail Federation reports that holiday sales in those two months have averaged about 19% of total annual retail sales over the last five years, and 2024 holiday core retail sales reached a record $994.1 billion according to U.S. Census Bureau data. For a small store, the checkout counter is one of the highest-exposure square feet you have during that window, and it is often the least planned.
One honest caveat before the tips: evidence on checkout impulse buying is mixed. POPAI's 2012 Shopper Engagement Study found 76% of purchase decisions are made in-store, while a peer-reviewed study of checkout behaviour in food and grocery retail concluded impulse buying at the checkout area was "minimal and sporadic" for most product categories, and was driven mainly by store environment, in-store promotion, and offers. So treat the counter as a low-cost test you measure, not a guaranteed lift.
Here are seven practical ways to set one up. They apply to beauty supply stores, salons, barbershops, beauty schools, and general retailers alike.
1. Treat the counter as a zone, not leftover space
Decide, deliberately, what the two feet next to your register are for: unplanned add-ons at the moment the wallet is already out. A useful test for anything you put there — can a customer decide to buy it in the few seconds while you ring them up? If it needs explanation, comparison, or a price check, it is probably better placed on the shelf.
2. Stock grab-and-go price points
The counter suits small-ticket, low-deliberation purchases. In a beauty supply store, perfume body oil roll-ons are a common choice — they are our best-selling item, they are compact, and the 0.33 fl. oz. range covers 129 scents (BR01–BR129), so there is usually something that fits the customer at the register. The 1 fl. oz. size, available in 24 scents, adds a second price point in the same footprint. One-ounce essential oils and small accessories work the same way. Higher-ticket items are generally better left in the aisle.
3. Keep the pricing simple
An unplanned purchase depends on a fast decision, so anything that slows the shopper down works against it. Round numbers, one clear sign per product, no mental math. A short sign that says what the product is — for example, "Add a scent to your bag" — does some of the work while you count change. If you bundle, keep the math obvious: a simple multi-buy a customer can compute at a glance is easier to act on than a percentage discount.
4. Put testers where hands already are
A roll-on display across the store asks the customer to walk over. A tester at the register does not — the customer is already standing there. There is some evidence that staffed lanes matter here: IHL Consulting Group's self-checkout study found impulse purchases dropped 32.1% among women and 16.7% among men at self-checkout compared with staffed checkout, partly because self-checkout lanes are less merchandised. A tester and a short, honest recommendation from staff give that interaction something to be about. Rotate which scents get tester duty so regulars find something new.
5. Limit the assortment
The counter tends to fail in two directions: empty, or buried. As a practical rule of thumb, a small edited set — roughly three to five items — is easy for a shopper to scan in the time they have. A crowded counter is harder to read, and shoppers often skip the whole zone. If you are tempted to add a sixth item, consider swapping one out instead.
6. Rotate it monthly through Q4
A counter that never changes stops registering with regulars, and Q4 provides a natural rotation calendar. October: Halloween-season impulse buys. November: gifting begins, and roll-ons and small sets shift from "treat for me" to "easy gift." December: stocking-stuffer season, when the 1 fl. oz. sizes and small accessories tend to do their best work. Same fixture, three fresh looks, and each reset takes minutes.
7. Let a ready-made display do some of the work
If building a counter program from scratch is one more job you do not have time for, ready-made display sets cover product, fixture, and presentation in one box. For the counter specifically, stick to the compact ones — the BRSET roll-on display (6 pc) or the color contact lens display are sized to sit next to a register. The full BR roll-on display stand is not; it is built for floor or shelf placement. Check the footprint against the space you actually have before ordering.

What it costs to test
This is a relatively low-risk test. There is no minimum order quantity or minimum order amount at IWELL US Wholesale, orders over $500 ship free and orders under $500 ship at a flat $35, so counter stock can be folded into a regular Q4 order. Orders placed during business hours usually ship the same day, though shipping can take 1–3 days in some cases. Measure it simply: note what sits by the register, and track how often it ends up in the bag. Keep what moves, rotate what does not.
